One Local Summer and Local Food Month Wrap Up

As I mentioned in a previous post, this was a tough week for doing local at my house. We had lots of homemade, healthy meals - but from items in the pantry and freezer that weren't necessarily local.

Tonight I tried to get with the program a little better and here is the local meal I shared with my middle and youngest daughters (ages 5 and 20 months). Oldest daughter is spending the night with my mom and DH is still away at Ft. Knox, KY.

Our own M4-D Ranch Sirloin Steak Beeftips -0 miles
Steamed Broccoli - not local - purchased at the NSA Commissary
Potato Pancakes - potatoes from today's farmer's market adventure - from Lor's produce stand, produced in Middleton, TN - about 50-60 miles away. Eggs in the potato pancakes are from a family at church who brings them to us every week - they live about 12 miles away.
Wine for me was a Perry - made from pears at Old Medina Winery, about 90 miles away.
kid wine for the girls was a non-alcoholic Muscadine Grape Juice - purchased at Old Medina Winery but made at the Post Familie Vineyards in Altus, Arkansas.

Not local ingredients: salt, pepper, touch of worcestershire sauce and flour in the potato pancakes. Oh yes, and the organic ketchup you see in the background of the picture was for the girls to have with their potato pancakes :-)

In all, very delicious and enjoyed by everyone - especially the potato pancakes, which my youngest daughter just devoured.

This was my first time to try the Perry wine - it was very good and you could definitely tell it was made from pears. It had a fruity aroma similar to our backyard pears when I'm cooking them down to make pear butter or pear pickles. A slightly tart taste initially, but with a very smooth finish. Delicious.
