Children's Drawers - Works For Me Wednesday

WFMW_June2008

It used to be really frustrating to me to try to get my girls' clothing into their drawers. They each have a 4 drawer chest - one drawer for undies, one for nighties, one for shirts and one for bottoms. Sounds pretty simple~ just fold them, stack them and put them in, right?

Well, even though I try to keep their clothing to reasonable numbers (despite my mom's tendencies for all things shopping for her only grandchildren), the stacking thing just didn't work, especially for the shirts and bottoms.

The girls couldn't see what was on the bottom of each stack and before you know it, the drawer would be a tumbled mess. I quickly got tired of re-folding it for the little ones or standing watch as the older ones re-did their mess.

One day it came to me that I could put the clothes in the drawer in a different way. I know - gasp - there is not a requirement to stack your clothes in the drawers from bottom to top!

Now, I put their shirts and bottoms ON END, in a long row. I can get 3 or more rows in each drawer (less as the sizes get bigger) and now the girls can see all their options at one glance.

Here are some photo examples:

This one is a shot of my 6 year old's shirt drawer - she can easily see her shirts and match colors with her pants in the drawer below:

Here is a shot of my 2 year old's shirt drawer - she can easily see her shirts and although she doesn't always match, she knows to look in the drawer below for her pants:

Here are the pants for my 2 year old - with the longer items in the middle kind-of as a divider:

As the girls get old enough to help with folding the laundry, I just show them how to fold their items to fit neatly in their drawers.

For shirts, they fold them in half from side to side first - (the sleeves meet), then they fold that in half (top to bottom). This creates the crease that is the side that goes up in the drawers as you see above.

For pants, they fold them from side to side, then over once from top to bottom and in half again.

Hopefully those explanations are as clear as mud - you can look at the pictures and see the mental images I'm trying to create here!

This is a great idea!!! Why didn't I think of it? My boys are forever dumping all the shirts in an effort to find just the one they're looking for. I'm going to start this! Thank you!

Fantastic idea. We are soon going to have two girls sharing the room and so I was trying to figure out how to better organize the drawers. Love this idea!

Great idea! Isn't it funny how ENDLESS possibilities exist when we change our way of thinking :)

that is a good idea! But I fear my kids drawers would still end up a jumbled mess!

I need this tip for myself. I have ADD and have had a hard time my whole life not having to pull everything out of a drawer so I can see it all - I'm a very visual person. I'll have to try it - and oh yeah, for my daughter too!

We've been doing this for a while now, and it is so helpful! It is so much easier to find things.

I have even started doing it with my short sleeve shirts as well. Too bad my shorts and pants don't fit that way...

Outside of the box thinking - isn't it amazing what it does for a person... ;)

My husband does this in his tee shirt drawer - I've told him before he's like a woman with shoes, but his is tee-shirts. But he can easily find whatever he wants. :)

Great idea to try with kids!

Excellent! I just spent 2 hours cleaning out my daughter's drawers just the other day. We purged a lot of things and put away winter things. Now she actually has an EMPTY drawer. I haven't told her yet! :-)

That is a great idea. I think I might try that with some cardboard shoeboxes for my dd's drawer. Her drawers are wide, and I think we could get four rows, but I think she would let it get really out of control.

Wonderful idea! Thanks for showing the pictures too: I am a very visual type and seeing what you've done made me realize how easy and neat it would be to do the same thing for our daughters' drawers.

Thanks a lot for your tip!

I have to say thank you! I don't know why I never thought to organize their drawers this way before. Its really simple and so much better than the old way of folding and laying flat on top of eachother so you can't see anything. I finally made the switch from winter to summer clothes and this made the transition so much better! THanks!
